When Bruce Springsteen first announced Letter To You, his brand new album available today, the news was met with understandable excitement. After all, it’s his first album with his E Street Band pals since 2014’s High Hopes (his most recent solo album was 2019’s Western Stars).

The premiere of “Ghosts” increased anticipation for the album even more, a customarily soaring anthem from “The Boss” that elicited strong reactions:

The album’s now here, as released on Friday and available on digital streaming platforms.

Letter To You has a huge, epic sound that instantly puts the album in ‘classic Springsteen’ territory — and that has a great deal to do with how the record came about.

“I love the emotional nature of Letter to You,” said Bruce in a statement accompanying the big news. “And I love the sound of the E Street Band playing completely live in the studio, in a way we’ve never done before, and with no overdubs. We made the album in only five days, and it turned out to be one of the greatest recording experiences I’ve ever had.”

More on the album’s story:

Letter to You includes nine recently written Springsteen songs, as well as new recordings of three of his legendary, but previously unreleased, compositions from the 1970s, “Janey Needs A Shooter,” “If I Was The Priest,” and “Song For Orphans.” Springsteen is joined on Letter To You by Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa, Garry Tallent, Stevie Van Zandt, Max Weinberg, Charlie Giordano and Jake Clemons. The album was produced by Ron Aniello with Bruce Springsteen, mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Bob Ludwig.

In addition to the standard pre-release attention given to the album, there is also a special behind-the-scenes documentary regarding the album’s conception premiering on Apple TV+ on release day. Here’s a preview:
