Few artists have commanded the alt/pop world with as much authority recently as Olivia Rodrigo, whose 2021 debut album Sour earned the young singer/songwriter near-instant fame and a quickly sold-out headlining tour.

Along the way, Rodrigo’s profile grew exponentially, she won three Grammy Awards and, now, earned a duet with none other than the legendary Billy Joel.

At his concert at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, the “Piano Man” welcomed Rodrigo to the stage as a surprise guest for a pair of songs. One of them, Sour single “deja vu,” features this line from Rodrigo, directed at an ex-boyfriend:

Do you call her
Almost say my name?
‘Cause let’s be honest
We kinda do sound the same
Another actress
I hate to think that I was just your type
I’ll bet that she knows Billy Joel
‘Cause you played her “Uptown Girl”
You’re singing it together
Now I bet you even tell her
How you love her
In between the chorus and the verse (ooh) (I love you)

At MSG, Rodrigo and Joel (and his backing band) teamed up for both songs, first “Deja Vu,” then “Uptown Girl,” after Joel gave her a nice introduction to the gathered masses. Here’s video of their collaboration:

Clearly quite excited by this opportunity, Olivia Rodrigo shared some images on her Instagram Story expressing as much:

Joel’s Instagram page also commemorated the occasion.
