Beach Bunny started off as a solo singer/songwriter project for Chicago native Lili Trifilio in 2015. Now as a four-piece, the band has garnered success, racking up a number performances across the midwest leading up to the band’s next major performance at Lollapalooza 2019 in Chicago.

Trifilio made her introduction as her stage name, Beach Bunny, with the release of her first EP, Animalism. The five -track acoustic EP is heavy on themes of heartbreak and love, and shows off Trifilio’s natural talent as a songwriter and a vocalist. In 2016 she released her sophomore EP, Pool Party, another five-track album with the addition of an electric guitar developing the surf rock aesthetic Beach Bunny has incorporated into their newer music.

By 2017, Trifilio added backing musicians for her live performances. The new lineup comprised of guitarist Matt Henkels, bassist Aidan Cada and drummer Jon Alvarado became permanent after the indie-pop group participated in a battle of the bands competition in Elgin, IL. The band released their first single, “Sports,” together in 2018 followed by their first EP, Prom Queen, later that year.

Prom Queen is where Beach Bunny’s music evolved, as undoubtedly heard in their title track, a short, catchy tune that incorporates their surf and emo-rock aesthetics while being a social commentary on beauty standards. The Prom Queen EP juxtaposes sad lyrics with upbeat melodies, tackling relationship struggles and the pressures and uncertainties of being an adult. The EP also highlights the addition of the full band being a guitar-driven album.

The success of their music lead Beach Bunny to playing their biggest hometown show earlier this year at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. Before heading back to their hometown for Lollapalooza fest this August 1-4, Beach Bunny will be supporting PUP on the Canadian punk/pop band’s tour for their new album, Morbid Stuff, this spring.
