Everclear songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Art Alexakis has always used music to express his innermost thoughts and feelings — that personal well of inspiration was a driving force behind the band’s 1990s hits “Father of Mine,” “Santa Monica” and “I Will Buy You A New Life,” as well as others.

Today, Oct. 11, Alexakis releases Sun Songs, his first actual solo album. It comes during a time of heightened personal reflection, as Alexakis went public with a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in late March. He’s vowed to continue recording and playing live as long as he is able, but this situation is clearly on his mind quite a lot these days — as you’d expect.

His new song “The Hot Water Test” details the emotions of the initial diagnosis, and finds Alexakis — never one to shy away from heart-wrenching subject matter — fully in his element.

“White People Scare Me,” meanwhile, is a critique of our society and its ills, and is particularly damning in its lyrical content.

In all, Sun Songs — a mostly acoustic-driven affair, different from Everclear’s usual electric guitar-heavy onslaught, is a raw, personal set of songs from a man known for his rawness. The vulnerability that always permeates Alexakis’ music is here once again, and it’s powerful stuff.
