This past Friday, July 29, Anthrax’s 40th anniversary tour rolled through the Hollywood Palladium, finding the thrash metal titans sharing the stage with co-headliners Black Label Society and special guest Hatebreed.

Below, enjoy a recap of the nights’ festivities from Kate Schank.

Jamey Jasta, vocalist of Hatebreed, described the Hollywood Palladium as one of the best venues to be at in Los Angeles, and his loud welcome gave us a feeling that we were indeed in a cool place to hang out. The moshing started promptly, but the full energy of the revved-up masses was saved for later in the night. The music has a lot to offer, satisfying our collective lust for an escape, even for a night, from our complacent lifestyles. Hatebreed, out on the road in support of 2020’s Weight of the False Self, is really firing on all cylinders and delivered a powerful performance by all members of the band.

Zakk Wylde is, of course, a brilliant guitarist, and as soon as the Black Label Society banner lit up, it was quickly understood that he had planned this tour with industrial strength perspicacity resulting in the unshakeable promise of a great night of epic music.

The crowd awaits the moment when Zakk starts to shred … and we all wish it wouldn’t stop when it starts — we just hope the song won’t end! One of the best elements of a Zakk Wylde live performance is getting to see him play several of his guitars, giving us all a firsthand experience of how they sound and look. The guitars he showcases are stupendous to look at and we are just dazzled by his performance and shredding.

During its co-headlining set, Black Label Society was sure to pay homage to the two brothers in rock, Dimebag Darrell Vinnie Paul Abbott of Pantera — may they rest in peace as unmistakable pillars of heavy music as two of the greatest players of metal of all time, who provide so much inspiration for people in music all over the world.

With recent news of a Pantera tribute/reunion tour coming from remaining members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown (and their friends), it’s expected that the tour will also feature both Wylde and Anthrax’s Charlie Benante … so that ought to be exciting!

Speaking of Anthrax, the icons are out on their 40th anniversary tour. In celebration of their legacy, the show was introduced by a video compiled of chats with many well-known musicians about their appreciation of the band and its members.

The band’s dynamic stage performance was blazing, with astounding lights, lasers and sparks. Musicians comparable to them are rarely seen, as they are very strong performers and their antics were fun to witness. Joey Belladonna sounds incredible commanding the stage, with his band mates providing so much experience behind them. Bassist Frank Bello is at his best, a real demonstrative player who still likes to run up onto the riser behind the drums. Guitarist Scott Ian still plays like a charging race horse. Guitarist Jonathan Donais a heavyweight behind the songs.

Drummer Charlie Benante is skilled with his flare and musical abilities as a soloist, a privilege to enjoy.

All this to say: Anthrax will never die, nor will heavy metal. The three bands combined for an epic night celebrating the history of Anthrax and their legacy, which will last forever.
